What is Church and Doctrines of the Church

The root word of ‘church’ is derived from the Greek word ekklesia (Latin ecclesia). The term for the church means an assembly of people, congregation, or any group of people who come together to worship God. The area which deals with the doctrine of the church is usually referred to as ‘ecclesiology’. It is the area that seeks to give theoretical justification to an institution that has undergone development and change down the centuries.

This term is first used in a Christian sense in Acts 5:11.  Theological identity of the church is as follows: the church is the people of God, and the church has been chosen for the called people of God just as god called Israel in the past. The church is a community of salvation, a Church of the body which is called to bear witness as the “salt of the Earth” and “the light of the world”. It is also charged with the responsibility of going out to make disciples of all nations. The church is the body of Christ, the faith of the believer is understood to secure incorporation into the body of Christ. Church as servant people, God chose and called Israel to serve him, in the way God chose and called the church for service. The church is the community of spirit, the presence of the spirit enables the church to witness and grow. The church is a spiritual society that replaces Israel as the people of God in the world.

All Christians are made only in Christ despite their different origins and backgrounds. The church is the repository of true Christian teaching. Church gatherings throughout the world are to enable people to grow in faith and holiness. The concrete form of the church, including its piety, worship, spiritual communication, organizational structure, and collective functions should be unchanged over the period. In Christianity, the word ‘church’ means that are believe in Jesus Christ as their saviour and come together as an assembly or community or a group to worship. Believers gathering is not only for spiritual matters, it is also social work to help the people in need. The Christian church has a very important role in society like helping the poor in education, helping during the pandemic, providing good health through medical camp, etc. Moreover, the Christian church is preaching and teaching of life and ministry of Jesus Christ.
